Nowadays, people just love their cell phones and just cannot be without them. Consequently, smart phones are becoming the device of choice for many people who want their cell phone to do more than allow them to make phone calls.

Smart phones are essentially small computers that fit right into the palm of your hand and which can run a number of sophisticated applications. There are a variety of operating systems that power these smart devices such as Palm, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile. As such, the functionality is greatly determined by the operating system that drives your smart phone.

Most smartphone software is able to maintain your personal and business contacts, organize and sync your calendar, allow you to connect to the internet and give you the ability to check your email wherever you are.

Many of the smart phones also include standard multi-media functions like digital cameras that can capture still photos and also brief videos, and of course, fully functional MP3 players for both music and video playback.

Smart phones are particularly aimed at people who want or need to have access to important contacts, information, the internet and their music, but who just don’t want to be burdened with dragging their laptop everywhere they go in order to stay connected and on top of things. With most of these devices starting at around $200 and going up from there, they are not cheap and not for everyone, but addicted users say they are well worth the price.

According to cell phone reviews, the best of the smart phones will allow you to have access to a web whenever it is needed. The newest models have browsers that are able to display almost any web site, although often in slightly different ways than you might be accustomed to seeing on your desktop or laptop.

Push email is a popular feature on smart phones today and this means that your email inbox is constantly being kept up-to-date. The BlackBerry introduced this feature, but now Windows Mobile 5.0 phones can also do this. Other phones can be scheduled to grab new messages at scheduled intervals. A good smart phone will also be able to handle and display the more popular kinds of attachments you might receive, such as Excel, Word, PDF or PowerPoint files.

Similar to any PDA or computer, smart phones will give you the ability to add your own applications as well. There are many that are available free online from various sources, while other applications must be purchased. Some can be downloaded straight to your smart phone while others have be purchased from your PC and then installed through syncing.

Along with the announcement of the new Apple iPhone as the latest advancement in smart phones, came a good deal of hype as well about how the latest technology from Apple would revolutionize the SmartPhone software applications on the market.

There is no doubt that Apple is not only extremely skilled at bringing innovations to consumers, but they are also highly adept at creating marketing storms and media buzz that has people panting for more information and fighting to get their hands on the latest and greatest gadgets created through their wizardry.

Many industry insiders have proclaimed that SmartPhone software will be forever changed since the long awaited Apple iPhone was released at last earlier this year in June, coming after months of anticipation and after the announcement of the new device in January.

The day the Apple iPhone finally went on sale, on June 29, 2007, almost every single available handset was sold within hours, leaving the retail stores of AT&T and Apple with bare shelves until more iPhones could be shipped. Many are saying that it is too soon to know for sure if the iPhone is going to be the mega-hit in the long as so many have predicted. But, it is virtually certain that the future of SmartPhone software has changed with some of the new features and advancements that were integrated into smart phones with the introduction of the iPhone.

The Apple iPhone does indeed possess the potential to forever morph the mobile communications industry, most especially in the future design and implementation of SmartPhone software, as it will be found in other models of phones down the line.

And, while many of the Apple iPhone features are considered “cool”, such as the touch screen, spectacular graphics, gesture recognition and change-on-the-fly screen orientation, the real power behind such trademark components of the iPhone is the operating system it is built upon, which is a lighter version of the powerful Apple Mac OSX system. This means that the iPhone effortlessly integrates with other popular Apple products, such as Mac computers and iPods, Apple software and services, such as iTunes for Macs and PCs, and the iTunes website where people can purchase and download music, audio books, videos, movies and even television shows, not to mention tens of thousands of free podcasts.

This aspect also allows for the iPhone’s SmartPhone software to be updated regularly, seamlessly and practically in the background with very little intervention by the user of the device. While it is not unusual for the software for smart phones to be able to be updated, the ease of the process is unique to Apple’s approach.

It is already abundantly clear that the Apple iPhone has the potential to be a device that will shake-up the hand-held communications industry, not only due to the features it has already introduced, but also because of the ability to constantly bring new features to the market.

As new products and services that will run on the iPhone are thought up and created, the SmartPhone software its platform utilizes, will become more powerful and versatile.
