Cell Phones Service: The Basics
Author: Editor

Posted in Uncategorized | |

It’s not easy to find cell phones service that is cost efficient and meets the needs of the everyday cell phone user. Most cell phones service plans have hidden charges or they have features that the average user will never use. Cell phones service plans can also be confusing and involve a great deal of detail just to understand what is included. You can, however, find some companies that offer wireless phone plans that you customize to get the most out of your service.

For some people, a “friends and family” plan is ideal. This type of cell phones service plan lets them call the people they want to call in their circle of friends and family and lets them get a special deal on all of the calls placed in that network of people. For those that don’t place many calls outside of that circle of people, a “friends and family” oriented plan is a great idea. You can also get variations of this plan, such as a “couples plan” that allows you to call your sweetheart at a reduced rate.

Instead of getting locked into an expensive cell phones service plan, you can choose the option of getting a prepaid wireless plan. With a prepaid plan, you can pay for your minutes before you use them. When you run out, you just buy more minutes. This is convenient for the average cell phone user who does not use very many minutes each month. Rather than paying the expensive rates of the cell phones service plans that are available, prepaid wireless plans are often more convenient and cost-efficient.

There are other cell phone plans that suit different types of people. People that make a variety of long distance calls can get special rates on long distance calls, but their local calling rates often end up being a little bit higher because of that. The trick when picking a cell phone plan from a cell phones service company is picking a plan that works best with the types of calling you are most likely to make. Occasional long distance calling doesn’t particularly warrant shelling out the cash for a long distance calling plan.

Contracts for cell phones service plans can be lengthy and confusing. Before you sign it, though, be sure that you understand it completely. If there are parts you don’t understand, ask the service representative before signing it. If you can, find a company that will not charge excessive overage fees or cancellation charges. Almost every company does this, though, so it might be difficult to find one that doesn’t. either way, make sure you are happy with the plan before you sign you name.

Electroninc Arts Has More Mac Games

Electronic Arts, or EA as it is commonly known, is the publisher of some of the most popular current video and computer games. They recently announced their intentions to publish Mac games versions to run on the popular Apple Mac operating systems.

The company has already begun shipping some of its titles in Mac games versions and will continue to roll out additional titles as they are reworked to run on the Apple Mac computers. Some of the first titles made available as Mac games were: Battlefield 2142, Command and Conquer 3, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as well as Need for Speed Carbon.

Most of the Electronic Arts titles already have some type of history on the Apple Mac computers. For instance, Command and Conquer recently became available on Apple Mac OS X machines through an Aspyr port, just as previous versions of Harry Potter and Battlefield were, along with some other EA titles in Mac games. However, the Need for Speed Carbon is completely new to the Apple Mac computer game category and is the latest edition of the popular street racing game.

The biggest obstacle that computer game companies have encountered in writing Mac games code, has been the time lag from when a new game is introduced and the time it takes for it to be made available for the Apple Mac OS X platform.

The delay means that the publisher loses crucial momentum in their marketing campaigns because often several months, or even as much as a year, goes by before the same game is ready to join the list of Apple Mac games. By that time, a good percentage of the consumers have lost interest in the game, have purchased it for a different platform, such as a video game console, or are ready for the latest and greatest rather than last year’s news in video games.

In order to address this concern and achieve simultaneous release of their titles as Mac games too, EA is collaborating with TransGaming Technologies, who are developers of Cider. Cider is a technology that enables Windows-coded computer games to be run on the Intel-based Apple Mac computers.

Through Cider, several Mac conversions of popular games have been brought to the market including such well-known titles as Myst Online, X3 Reunion and the soon to be released EVE Online, which is a highly anticipated multi-player, role playing game that takes place in outer space.

The Cider technology uses what is called an abstraction layer that works much like the other Windows-on-Mac OS X products. This technology allows Windows to run in the Apple Mac OS X environment virtually, such as Parallels Desktop and Codeweavers.

Cider operates rather differently from those other solutions to running Windows on the Intel-based Macs, as it does not require the installation of a separate partition on your drive. Via the Cider software, the Windows applications can run just as if they were native Mac games, with the same look and feel that Mac fans expect.

Mac Software Getting More Versatile

About a decade ago, if you used a Windows-based computer, the thought of making a changeover to a Macintosh computer might have seemed impractical for a number of reasons. Perhaps it was because of the selection of Mac software available at that time.

However, these days, things are quite different. Apple has gained significant market share for its computers, in part because of the power and elegance of the foundational Mac software, the Apple Mac OS X operating system and in part because of the extreme popularity of the iPod, plus the more recent introduction of the Apple iPhone.

Along with a bigger market share has also come an increase in Mac software titles that are available. This has made the argument about not having enough software to run on the Apple Mac OS X machines, mute. As a result, more people are now seriously considering the switch, following the lead of many who already have.

These days, computer dependence is almost an epidemic and the thought of moving from a Windows platform to an Apple Mac OS X platform can make even the most technologically savvy person nervous, let alone the average computer user.

Apple’s recent move to using the Intel processor chips has made it significantly easier to run Windows applications on the new Intel-based Macs. This means that virtually any software for Windows is now also Mac software, so that a Windows user no longer has to worry about buying Mac versions of software they already own.

The centerpiece of the Apple Macintosh computing experience is the Mac software operating system, known as Apple Mac OS X. It features a UNIX-based core which gives it incredible speed, stability and security. With the most recent version, called Tiger, it has many features that are simply not found in a Windows-based environment.

There are now more than 12,000 Mac software applications that run on the Mac OS X platform and most of those have been introduced since 2001. These titles include such well-known and popular programs as Microsoft Office, the FireFox browser and Adobe Photoshop (which for many years only ran on Macs before being ported to Windows) as well as many other powerful and sophisticated applications from Apple, which are also highly intuitive and easy to use.

Even with all those titles available, the universe of Mac Software is still smaller than that of Windows applications. Enter applications such as Parallels Desktop for Mac. For a mere $80, Parallels will allow you to run Windows and the Apple Mac OS X at the same time, so that you can run any Windows application right alongside your favorite Mac software titles. You can even copy data and share your files and folders between the two platforms. This way, you do not have to invest in Mac versions of your favorite software, but you still gain all the advantages of running on a Mac Intel-based machine.

The Apple Mac OS X environment is virtually impervious to the spyware and viruses that are so prevalent in the Windows world these days. This fact alone allows Mac users to operate their computers daily with great peace of mind and it also means there is no need to spend money on Mac software to combat the hackers.

Mac Tutorials Can Make the Difference

The first Apple Macintosh computer was introduced to the marketplace back in the mid 1980′s, even before Windows was launched, yet the Mac seemed to be relegated to niche computing markets until Apple hit the market with the iPod a few years ago. Since then, Apple Mac computers have gained in popularity and many new Apple users are seeking Mac tutorials.

The most basic of the Mac tutorials comes with the simple and highly intuitive user interface that they have developed and perfected over more than two decades, with the most recent and most powerful version being the Apple Mac OS X environment.

The new Apple Mac computer users find that the Mac is easy to use, as well as intuitive and often very quickly gain a high comfort level. Still, there are areas where Mac tutorials can help them to be sure they are fully using the power of their Mac.

One of the more popular categories of Mac tutorials consists of instructions for making the transition from Windows, for those who are used to working in that environment. They will need to unlearn habits and understand how simple and straightforward things can be done using the Apple Mac operating systems.

A page at the Apple website, called Switch 101, offers a number of Mac tutorials to help people make the conversion to the Mac from Windows. It helps people adapt their Windows work habits to the Apple Mac OSX style of doing things. This page of tutorial topics is found at http://www.apple.com/support/switch101.

Some of the Mac tutorials that can be found at that page cover topics such as: how to get around your Mac and how to access everything; how to make connections to devices such as printers, digital cameras, iPods; learning to do the things on your Mac that you used to do on your PC; simple instructions on how to migrate your files; an overview of the various powerful Mac software programs that come with the unit; how to troubleshoot when things don’t go perfectly. For the vast majority of people, this is enough to get them off to a good running start with their new Apple Mac computer.

Another good website that features a vast array of Mac tutorials on various subjects is found at http://www.macinstruct.com/tutorials. This site is from a non-profit group who are dedicated to helping people learn how to use their Apple Mac computers. The web site offers completely free Mac tutorials and it is run completely by volunteers. They have online courses, a regular video podcast and expert columns.

The Mac tutorials that are available at MacInstruct.com are many and quiet varied. Just a quick sampling of the site shows subjects like: publishing your iCalendars on the web; making your iPod function as a removable hard drive; backing up often forgotten, but important items; making a movie with the iSight camera; setting up a new email account in the Apple Mail program, just to name a few.
